Sam Kerr’s first car was refreshingly relatable

Matildas captain Sam Kerr is one of the world's greatest sportspeople – but her first car was as humble as she is.

As a teenager in Perth, Matildas star Sam Kerr got her driver's licence as quickly as possible so she could drive herself to training sessions.

That commitment to her craft has paid off, with the now 29-year-old captaining Australia's national team to the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup.

While Kerr herself is now ferried around in luxury cars and has served as an ambassador for Hyundai, her automotive beginnings were a little more humble.

In a 2018 interview with The Chronicle newspaper, Kerr revealed her first car was a used Mazda 3 her mother purchased from a friend.

"Mum was keen to get me driving so I could take myself to training," Kerr told the paper.

Unfortunately for Kerr, one of her friends crashed the Mazda – and the soccer star attempted to take the fall.

Kerr's mother, however, wasn't convinced and Kerr eventually came clean.

"Mum was actually happy because [my friend] was 25 which turned out to be better for us anyway," Kerr said, referring to the insurance claim.

In the resurfaced 2018 interview, Kerr also revealed her dream cars.

"If I won lotto I'd have my business car, which would be a Range Rover Sport or an Evoque. And then I'd have my weekend car which would be a Jeep Wrangler that I could chuck my dogs in and go to the beach," the soccer star said.

In recent years, Kerr's automotive aspirations appear to be aiming a little higher – she was spotted test-driving (but not purchasing) a bright yellow Ferrari F12 TDF while back home in Perth in 2020.

Meanwhile, if you're trying to spot a Matilda in the wild, your best bet is looking for a Cupra, which was named the team's official vehicle partner in late 2022.
